Cleaning Glassware and Plasticware, K. Cayemitte, 4 March 2025

Dishwasher

  1. Load all dishware (plastic and glass) into a tray and bring to the 3rd floor where the dishwasher is located.

  2. Open dishwasher and add correct dish adaptors for the dishes you are washing.

  3. Large graduated cylinders should use adapter with large stands.

  4. For medium sized glassware use adapter with shorter stands.

  5. For small glassware use covered adapter.

  6. Once dishes are loaded pull the door to the dishwasher closed and press start.

  7. Should take about 10 mins.

  8. ** Do not stop the cycle in the middle.

Acid Wash

  1. Recipe: 3.7% HCl acid wash, 37% HCl Acid (100 ml in 1000 ml of DI water; scale volume as needed). Pour into a plastic tub big enough for items to be acid washed to be fully submerged.

  2. Remove any lab tape from items to be washed.

  3. Wear nitrile or plastic dishwashing gloves when transfering vessels to/from the acid bath.

  4. Triple rinse glass/plasticware in DI water, both inside and outside.

  5. Let glass/plasticware sit in the acid bath for at least 30 minutes, preferably 4 hours. Interior volume of items should be full of acid wash solution with no bubbles. Items can stay in the acid bath for many days.

  6. Triple rinse in MilliQ water, both inside and outside.

  7. Let dry with vessel openings upside down.

  8. If cleaned vessels are to be stored, cover openings with parafilm once fully dry.

** Replace acid bath every 5-6 months **

Used acid baths can be discarded as hazardous waste or diluted and/or combined with sodium hydroxide to reach a neutral pH of neutral and then discarded in sink drains.
